Tie-On Waist Beads vs. Clasp Waist Beads: Which Should You Choose?
If you're shopping for your very first strand, you've probably noticed that waist beads come in two styles.
Traditional tie-on waist beads.
And removable waist beads with a clasp or connector.
Before we go any further, I want to be clear about one thing:
At Raine Waistbeads, we only make traditional tie-on waist beads. We do not make or sell clasp waist beads.
Here's why, and how to decide what's right for you.
What Are Tie-On Waist Beads?
Tie-on waist beads are the traditional way waist beads have been worn across West Africa for generations.
The beads are strung on strong thread with no clasp. You measure the strand around your waist, tie it with a secure knot, trim the ends, and wear it day and night until you choose to cut it off.
Every strand in our shop is made this way, by hand.

Why We Only Make Tie-On Waist Beads
Tradition. Tying your beads on is how waist beads have always been worn. Honoring that tradition is the heart of everything we make.
Fit. A tie-on strand is knotted to your exact measurement, so it sits exactly where you want it.
Body awareness. Because the strand stays on and doesn't stretch, you notice when it sits higher or lower. Many women wear their beads to stay in tune with their bodies.
Intention. Many women set an intention as they tie the knot. It's a small ritual that makes the strand truly yours.
Clasp Waist Beads Have a Time and Place
I want to be honest with you.
Clasp waist beads are not wrong. They have a time and place.
If you have medical needs that mean you have to remove your beads, for procedures, imaging, or regular care, a removable style may be the better choice for you.
If you have sensory sensitivities that make wearing something all the time uncomfortable, a removable style may be better for you too.
And that is completely okay.
Please listen to your body and your doctor.
For everyone else, I always recommend traditional tie-on waist beads. That's the tradition, and that's what I've dedicated my craft to.
Just know that if you need a clasp style, you'll need to find it elsewhere, because it's not something we offer.
How to Size Tie-On Waist Beads
Our standard strands are 45 inches and fit about sizes 0 to 18, with extra length available for sizes 20 and up.
Measure where you want your beads to sit, whether that's your natural waist, your belly button, or your hips, and add a few inches for tying.
You'll trim the extra once your knot is secure.
How to Tie On Your Waist Beads
- Wrap the strand around your waist where you want it to sit.
- Hold both ends together and adjust until it feels comfortable, not tight.
- Tie a double or triple knot, pulling each one snug.
- Trim the excess thread, leaving a short tail.

Tie On Your Story
There's something special about tying on your waist beads for the very first time.
The knot.
The intention.
The moment you look down and see something beautiful that is entirely yours.
That's the tradition we honor in every strand we make.
It's the same feeling that started it all for me. You can read the story behind Raine here.
