The Story Behind Raine Waistbeads: How One Strand Changed My Life

If you had told me years ago that one small strand of beads would completely change the way I saw myself, I don't know if I would have believed you.

But that's exactly what happened.

Before Raine Waistbeads existed, before thousands of women around the world tied on their first strand from our collection, I was simply a woman trying to feel at home in my own body.

Like so many others, I spent years looking in the mirror and focusing only on what I wished I could change. My body never felt like enough. No matter what I accomplished or how I looked to other people, I struggled to see beauty in myself. Body dysmorphia has a way of convincing you that you're always one step away from finally feeling worthy.

I carried that feeling with me for years.

Everything changed in 2016.

While visiting Harlem, New York, I purchased my very first strand of African-inspired waist beads. I didn't fully understand how much they would mean to me. I simply thought they were beautiful.

But the moment I tied them around my waist, something shifted.

For the first time in a very long time, I wasn't looking at my body with criticism. I wasn't calculating what needed to change or wishing I looked different. Instead, I noticed how beautiful my body already was.

Those tiny beads didn't magically erase my insecurities, but they gave me something I had never experienced before: permission to appreciate the body I was living in.

That feeling stayed with me.

Over time, my waist beads became much more than jewelry. They became a quiet reminder to celebrate myself exactly as I was while still allowing room for growth. They marked milestones, reflected seasons of my life, and helped me reconnect with my femininity in a way I hadn't before.

I realized that if one strand could have that kind of impact on me, maybe it could do the same for someone else.

That thought became the foundation of Raine Waistbeads.

Why I Started Raine

In 2020, I officially launched Raine Waistbeads with a simple mission: To create handcrafted waist beads that help women feel beautiful, connected, and intentional.

Every waist bead we make is handcrafted with care because I know firsthand that what you're purchasing isn't "just beads."

You're investing in a daily reminder.

A reminder of your goals.

A reminder of your healing.

A reminder of your softness.

A reminder that your body deserves to be celebrated today—not only after it changes.

Since opening our doors, we've been incredibly honored to serve more than 18,000 women around the world. Every order reminds me that this journey has become so much bigger than myself.

Why the Name "Raine" Matters

People often ask where the name Raine comes from.

It isn't just a beautiful word.

Raine is the maiden name of the women who came before me.

My mother.

My grandmother.

The generations whose strength, resilience, and love continue to guide me every day.

Naming this business after them was never just about honoring my family. It was about carrying their legacy forward through something that empowers other women.

Every package that leaves our studio carries a piece of that legacy with it.

More Than Handmade Waist Beads

At Raine, every strand is handcrafted because we believe intentional things deserve intentional hands.

Our waist beads are inspired by African traditions while embracing the individuality of every woman who wears them. Some customers choose them to celebrate milestones. Others wear them for confidence, cultural connection, body awareness, spirituality, or simply because they love how they look.

There is no single "right" reason to wear waist beads.

Your story is enough.

That has always been one of my favorite things about this community. Every woman brings her own meaning to her strand.

The Community We Never Expected

When I first started making waist beads, I imagined selling beautiful pieces.

What I never imagined was building a community.

Over the years, I've received messages from women who tied on their first strand after surviving illness. Women celebrating pregnancy. Women rebuilding their confidence after heartbreak. Women learning to love their postpartum bodies. Women reaching long-awaited health goals. Women honoring their heritage.

Some stories have made me cry.

Others have made me smile for days.

Each one reminds me why I started.

Looking Forward

Raine has grown in ways I never could have imagined, but one thing has never changed.

Every design begins with intention.

Every collection tells a story.

Every package is prepared with gratitude.

My hope is that when you tie on your Raine Waistbeads for the very first time, you experience even a small piece of what I felt back in Harlem all those years ago.

Not because waist beads change who you are.

But because sometimes they help you see who you've been all along.

Thank you for allowing Raine to become a small part of your story.

With love,

Kaylah
